Is there any isntrument that you prefer over others? PB : You have been in a number of bands and played various instruments. The book was written by DadвЂ™s second wife, Crystal, whoвЂ™s the mother of my sister Ariel. She passed away from complications of breast cancer seven months after Dad. JZ : Mom was an actress and as much as she wanted to be a singer, well, not so much. PB : You were born in 1969 to Warren Zevon and Marylin 'Tule' Livingston, People here know Warren well, but I believe your mother was also a musician and I believe she at least wrote one book about her life with Warren. Pennyblackmusic spoke to him about his Dad's musical legacy and 'Insides Out'. While Warren's recordings were very much in a classic singer-songwriter's style, Jordan's songs have much more of a 70's new wave and power pop influence. Jordan released his debut album, 'Insides Outside' in April on New West Records, whose roster also includes John Hiatt, Kris Kristofferson, Ray Davies, Steve Earle, Drive-By Truckers and Jason Isbell. He also co-produced the 2004 tribute album, 'Enjoy Every Sandwich: Songs of Warren Zevon' and appeared on it, singing on 'Studebaker', a previously unreleased song of Warren's. Jordan sung on his father's last few records and was the co-executive producer on his dying father's much acclaimed final album, 'The Wind', which was released a week before he died and won a posthumous Grammy. He has also worked as a press agent for Arista Records and been the producer of several independent films. Jordan began his musical career playing in various groups, including the New Originals, who later evolved into the iMPOSTERS. The title was taken from an offhand comment the singer made during his final Letterman appearance.Jordan Zevon is the son of the cult rock musician, Warren Zevon, who died of cancer in 2003. His cover of вЂњMutineerвЂќ appeared on Enjoy Every Sandwich: The Songs of Warren Zevon, a tribute album that came out in 2004. HeвЂ™d been playing Zevon songs the entire month, sometimes playing three of them a night. On this exact same night, Bob Dylan covered the song during a gig in St. HereвЂ™s a video of вЂњMutineerвЂќ from the Letterman show. I felt like, вЂI canвЂ™t be in this movie, I didnвЂ™t get my lines.вЂ™ That was very tough.вЂќД¬ontrary to the predictions of many doctors, Zevon lived another 11 months after his Letterman appearance, long enough to witness the birth of his grandchild and see The Wind get released to rapturous reviews. He was giving me the guitar that he always used on the show. And as weвЂ™re talking, heвЂ™s taking his guitar strap and hooking it, wrapping it around, then he puts the guitar into the case and he flips the snaps on the case and says, вЂHere, I want you to have this, take good care of it.вЂ™ And I just started sobbing. HereвЂ™s a guy who had months to live and weвЂ™re making small talk. вЂњAfter the show, it was heartbreaking - he was in his dressing room,вЂќ Letterman told Rolling Stone in 2008. Many in the audience probably had trouble maintaining their composure, but Zevon never wavered. Zevon had no plans to tour at this point, so he knew that his live renditions of вЂњMutineer,вЂќ вЂњGeniusвЂќ and вЂњRoland the Headless GunnerвЂќ (played at LettermanвЂ™s request) would probably be his final public performances. вЂњItвЂ™s not like bed rest and a lot of water will straighten you out.вЂќ вЂњThey certainly donвЂ™t discourage you from doing whatever you want,вЂќ he said. It means you better get your dry cleaning done on special.вЂќ He also talked about his in-progress album The Wind, which came out the following August. вЂњI have a form of lung cancer that spread. вЂњI might have made a tactical error by not going to a physician for 20 years,вЂќ he said. The October 30th, 2002 show one of the most emotional Letterman broadcasts ever, but Zevon did his best to keep things light. The Crackup and Resurrection of Warren Zevon вЂњYouвЂ™ve been the best friend my music has ever had.вЂќ Letterman was a huge Zevon fan and heвЂ™d featured the singer on his show dozens of times, often subbing him in for Paul Shaffer when the bandleader was busy with other projects.
